Very nice machine, after initial problems

Pros:

Processor, Memory, Storage, Input/Output compatibility, Wireless card, Display resolution, Screen size, Display performance, Video card, Support
Cons: Keyboard/peripherals, Weight, Build Quality

I bought the high end 17" portable. The service before the sale was excellent, but just after my purchase the office I worked with in Canada was closed.

The machine arrived on the date promised, and was beautiful.

However, after 2 weeks of use something strange happened, the machine became unresponsive, and required frequent reboots. The tech service center service was very good, and initially diagnosed the problem as a stuck key. They ordered a key board for the machine and within two days the keyboard was replaced. That seemed, for one day, to solve the problem. But... the problem started to recur. The service center thought it might be the touchpad, so a new touch pad was ordered and installed ...another two days lost.

Same thing again. It seemed to work for a day then the problem recurred. This time the service center decided it must be the Number pad. Two day wait and another tech visit.

This time success, and I have been very happy with the machine since.

I came very close to demanding that Lenovo take back the machine. My initial experiance was not what I would expect from a new machine. Now that the problems have been rectified I am very happy with it.

A 13.8lb beast of a laptop

Pros:

Processor, Memory, Storage, Display resolution, Screen size, Display performance, Video card, Durability, Warranty, Support, Build Quality
Cons: Keyboard/peripherals, Battery, Included Software

It is hard to truly appreciate the w700 until you open it. When you see the 17in LCD screen with its 1920x1200 resolution, the full-sized keyboard, the speaker grille that runs along the top of the entire keyboard (over a foot long), and the tiny "Core2Extreme" sticker, you know you have arrived.

This is truly a beast of a laptop. The Core 2 Extreme is bursting with raw CPU power. The Nvidia FX3700M with its one GIGABYTE of video RAM will handle everything from web browsing to the most demanding 3D apps or games. The keyboard is a touch typist's dream. Fullsized and ready for action. The built-in RAID controller and *TWO* SATA drive bays mean storage will keep up with everything else.

Let's talk about ports. This desktop replacement has them all. Five USB ports, DVI-D, HDMI, RJ45, RJ11, mini-USB, smart card reader, headphones, microphone, PC card, plus...plus...it still has a standard VGA (DE15F) port.

With all these features and all the power on tap, you won't be carrying this thing around like your average notebook or laptop. The w700 with AC adapter weighs in at around 13.8lbs. It is so big that very few regular 17in laptop bags will fit it. If you can find the Lenovo bag for this laptop, GET IT. Otherwise, be prepared to try on several bags at your local computer retailer.

Also, the power brick for this computer isn't backwards compatible with earlier Thinkpads, probably due to the power draw. The Core 2 Extreme and Nvidia FX3700M need lots of power and Lenovo upgraded the power brick.

In closing, this is, by far, the best Thinkpad I've owned. It's also the biggest, most powerful, and most expensive one. If you are looking for raw power and speed, 3D graphics ability, and need exercise, the w700 is perfect for you.

PS: The software bundle for this laptop is...welll...pretty awful. First thing I did was reinstall the OS and base drivers.

Excellent Desktop Replacement

Pros:

Processor, Memory, Storage, Input/Output compatibility, Keyboard/peripherals, Wireless card, Display resolution, Screen size, Display performance, Video card, Bluetooth, Battery, Durability, Warranty, Support, Build Quality, discrete graphics, raid array
Cons: Weight, size this is not a small computer

I got this for my wife, and intended for it to be a portable laptop, but it was HUGE! It's more intended to be a high performance desktop replacement. I ended up returning it and getting a W500 instead, and the return process was smooth and painless. Based on the service I received and my experience with their reliability, I would recommend Lenovo, and their products over any other manufacturer.
