Best Deal

Pros:

price, thinkvantage

Better design than older genration of Thinkpad series. I'm an IT student and everytime some one asked me what laptop they should buy. I said either this one or T series, depend on how much they can afford. The laptop is great as it comes with thinkvantage. I bought 2 of them for my auntie and uncle. They love it.

Great Value - ThinkPad reliability for less $

Pros:

Processor, Memory, Keyboard/peripherals, Wireless card, Screen size, Weight, Battery, Durability, Warranty, Support, Security Features
Cons: plastic top

I opted for this SL laptop after researching tons of independent reviews online.

I use this computer everyday for work on a website. I like the design, but more importantly it is fast, has a powerful battery (5 hours or so), and maintains a good wireless connection. I bought extra memory and extra ram. It is definitley portable, but with the glossy top, is a magnet for fingerprints. Not as nice as the titanium they use in the other thinkpads. but for the price, it's a really good deal. I highly recommend it!

Great Laptop - Poor Screen

Pros:

Processor, Input/Output compatibility, Keyboard/peripherals, Bluetooth, Weight, Build Quality
Cons: Display performance, led screen has poor colors, led screen has poor contrast

I got the 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 14" SL 400 with an LED screen and 1 GB of Ram for my wife. I upgraded the Ram to 4 GB once I received it.

While my wife loves it, and I am happy with it's performance, I am very disappointed in one very important aspect of the Laptop - the screen.

While the LED screen is very bright, it is unable to show vivid colors, with reds and oranges looking drab. It also has poor contrast and does not show blacks very well. All of which makes this screen useless for any type of photo editing. I spend a couple of frustrating hours trying to adjust every setting possible, but to no avail.

So if you are a photographer and plan on editing pictures with your laptop, I suggest you pass on at least the LED version of the SL 400 laptop. But, for what it's worth, my wife and her friends love the glossy screen.

Another caution is that the glossy screen becomes a huge liability outdoors, in cars, or in airplanes. Anywhere where there is sunlight, the screen becomes like a mirror and it becomes very difficult to use it, even with the brightness at the highest setting. On a 1.5hr drive this past weekend, I tried watching a movie while sitting in the passenger seat while my wife drove. I was constantly shifting the angle of the screen to avoid reflections.

Conclusion: Performance and Weight are great. Glossy LED screen was very disappointing.
