Great features, very acceptable performance for $

The notebook was purchased to replace an old desktop. Great features including Bluetooth. For the money performance is very acceptable. HP service and support are very good. I decided on this size because I wanted a number pad yet still have the portablity.

Outstanding System

This is a wonderful computer. I upgraded my order to a system with the 2.4 processor, 4 gig of memory and the NVIDIA 512 mb video card and while I can't speak to the base configuration, I can say that at least with the system that has my specs, it is an amazing product.

The product arrived earlier than initial shipping had indicated, which was a plus. It was packaged very well and cosmetically it is a beautiful looking laptop (I've looked at the Mac laptops a couple of times - my opinion is that this is far prettier).

The performance of Vista Home Premium 64 bit is fantastic, and for all the complaints about Vista, this system has no performance issues that I have been able to see and I'm doing Web development work (running both Dreamweaver and Photoshop at the same time, with lots of opened images, etc) with iTunes running in the background. Not a hiccup thus far. It took me just an hour or so to learn Vista well enough to set it to "classic mode" for some of the look and feel I'm used to, and I was easily getting around in it and reloading all my old music, pictures, code, etc, with ease.

The computer has a nice, solid, sturdy feel. The 16" screen is very nice - large enough for writing and Web development work. The keyboard is wonderful, with a really nice tactile sensation. I like it much better than the Mac keyboards, and much more than my old Toshiba's keyboard. The built in SRS speakers are great and with a few tweaks to the software that comes installed, I was able to get outstanding sound (it sounds way better with a nice set of headphones too). The touch-pad is a little "sticky" vs. some of the other touch-pads I've used, but not enough to make it a negative for me.

The only issue that I found with this system, and it's not a fault of the system itself but of the factory default settings for the video card, is that upon the initial start up the screen appeared very washed out and dull - horrible, actually. (This may only be a problem with the NVIDIA card not the Intel card). If you get this system with the NVIDIA graphics card, be sure to go to the Control Panel, and select the NVIDIA Control Panel. The default settings are "Brightness 50%, Digital Vibrance 0%, Contrast 50% and Gamma 50%". These settings are really, really bad so far as how your display will look upon first start up.

I adjusted the sliders on the NVIDIA Control Panel to the following settings and my monitor just "popped" with crystal clear colors and vibrance: "Brightness 45%, Digital Vibrance 50%, Contrast 60%, Gamma 40%". Depending on your environment or lighting you may need to tweak them a little bit one way or the other but especially the changes to "Digital Vibrance" and "Gamma" (which is the brightness of the mid-tone colors on your system) made a huge difference.

If you should make these changes, bring up a few photos on your system, then go back to the NVIDIA Control Panel to "restore defaults" and compare the difference to the factory default settings, you'll see what a dramatic difference it makes.

HP should really do something about these factory default settings (at least for the NVIDIA) because I would venture 9.5 out of 10 people would never know to go and change the settings and would simply think the screen is bad. I can tell you, after making these changes, the screen on this system is beautiful and those default settings do not do it justice.
