Monster Machine

I got hold of my DV8 this Sunday i.e. 31 Jan 2010 and was surprised to see this huge monster machine. The video quality is excellent I played 3 different HD quality video simultaneously from HDD and all were playing smoothly without any jerks along with McAfee was scanning the HDD in background.

The physical quality is also great neat good design and finish. The only issues with this notebook is its weigh which is off course due to extra large design and other issue is battery backup time which is around 90 minutes only .

I would recommend this machine to all those users who need maximum processing power.

Great laptop

I've had this laptop for 3 months now and I have to say that I've been more than satisfied with its speed and quality.
The screen is bright and pleasing to the eye. I have noticed that after the screen has been off for a few minutes, it takes about 30-60 seconds for the lamp to warm up and reach its full brightness. But the color is good and the aspect ratio makes for a wonderful movie viewing experience.
The video card is good enough for light gaming (games, 3-4 years old run smoothly with graphics turned all the way up). HD video plays flawlessly.
The dual hard drives add to the performance of this laptop. I recommend opting for the solid state drive. Windows 7 runs faster and starts up quicker with a SSD. The laptop sees both hard drives seperately, not as one single drive.
The keys are a little on the soft side but there is little flex in the board itself so typing is not that bad.
The i7 processor encodes video at excellent speed. A two hour movie can be encoded into an M4V file in less than 30 minutes with Handbrake.
If you get the TV tuner, it will come with a second remote control that is much larger and offers more options. The remote works very well with the MediaSmart and\or Media Center software. The tuner itself does a fine job and it comes with a coax adapter to connect your laptop to your cable box so you don’t have to rely on the antenna.
I highly recommend getting the Long Life battery instead of the larger battery. Batteries are expensive and typically last for only a year. Getting 3 years of full life out of a battery was another reason I chose to buy an HP laptop.
My only two gripes would be with the trackpad which is too smooth to allow your finger to glide easily (which isn't an issue for me considering I use a wireless mouse) and the lack of a backlit keyboard. Both are minor issues and not enough for me to lower my rating.
I am extremely satisfied with my decision and recommend the dv8 to anyone looking for a laptop that will serve as a mobile desktop.
